2014 SURFER Poll – Best Maneuver, Kelly Slater

Comments 24

  1. Should've been Meola – Slater's was insane but I'm not convinced he didn't just over-rotate. Meola's was smooth, fully intentional and with no loss of momentum. John John's was just plain freaky – never seen a crazier recovery!!!!

  2. Yes John John's was insane, but its "best maneuver", not "best, o wow how lucky was it that the wind pushed the board back onto his feet". It was an absolute fluke. At the end of the day without the complete unintentional board release, it was only an inverted air reverse (but a very long and high one and landed with a nose pick) Excellent and worthy contender. But Kelly intended on doing that move, and OMFG how fast was he rotating when you see it in normal speed. A throw away nose pick reverse has been done countless times, but who has done a 540/720 this year, and that high.

I don't get why so many people hate on Kelly, he doesn't pick the score and results in these things. He's no longer the best PR pinup guy for the sport, John John is, so if peers and judges want to play bias then one would think it would swing to John John.

Also Meola's was a better move then John John's. So perfectly executed, but again its been done. Correct me if I'm wrong but no one else has done a rotation like that.

  3. C'MON!! John John's was completely off the scale. Although you could say it was a fluke cos he didn't look like he was going to make it, the fact he went for it means it wasn't. Matt Meola's was pretty crazy as well. I'm a big fan of Slater's, but he shouldn't have taken this award, and if he did he should've invited John John up and given it to him. Meola was probably in a tent at some way out break, too busy frothing about the next day's conditions to care.
